The demilitarized zone (DMZ)—a bright green strip running along the 38th parallel—has naturally remained preserved from human contact. This so-called ¡°waist¡± of the Korean Peninsula connects its backbone running from Mount Baekdu in the North to Mount Halla in the South. The two mountains form the foundation of cooperation for natural protection. The DMZ serves as the base of the ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula, which will be the beginning of the formation of the Northeast Asian ecological network.
